The Democratic Attorneys General Association, (DAGA) is a national political organization formed to support the election of Democrats to the office of attorney general in all of the states and territories of the United States. DAGA raises money to provide financial support to Democratic candidates for attorney general. DAGA also provides political consulting, technical assistance, candidate training, talent recruitment and other general political support services for sitting Democratic attorneys general and candidates for the vital office.
In 2010, DAGA spent $4.8 million in support of Democrats in 20 states across the country. With those resources, we were able to hold 25 states while other state offices saw larger losses in the Democratic ranks. Last year, Democratic incumbents in Kentucky and Mississippi defeated their challengers to win re-lection. This year there are 11 races – five open seat elections (MT, PA, UT, OR and WA), five incumbents likely seeking reelection (MO, NC, IN, VT and WV), and 1 AG elected by the state legislature (ME).
The office of attorney general is the second most powerful in state government. The attorney general represents the people of the state in civil matters and in many cases also oversees state criminal cases, as well. Increasingly the office of the attorney general has served as a stepping stone to higher state and federal office. In fact, during the past few years over 11 former Democratic attorneys general have been elected Governor or to the U.S. Senate and 2 are now serving in Cabinet posts in President Obama’s Administration.
DAGA holds numerous events throughout the year and works with Democratic attorneys general from across the U.S. to engage corporate, civic and individual members in thoughtful analysis of some of the most important issues facing the country. DAGA members have the opportunity to interact with Democratic attorneys general and discuss a variety of public policy and legal matters.
